Sikhism·Raag Basant·Shabad 65
Verse 5 of 9

You Are the Listener

ਮਨੁ ਚਲੈ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਾਖੁ ॥
man chalai na jaa-ee thaak raakh.
His mind wanders out, and cannot be brought back or restrained.
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਨ ਸਾਖੁ ॥
bin har ras raatay pat na saakh.
Without being imbued with the sublime essence of the Lord, it has no honor or credit.
ਤੂ ਆਪੇ ਸੁਰਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਰਾਖੁ ॥
too aapay surtaa aap raakh.
You Yourself are the Listener, Lord, and You Yourself are our Protector.
ਧਰਿ ਧਾਰਣ ਦੇਖੈ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪਿ ॥੪॥
Dhar Dhaaran daykhai jaanai aap. ||4||
You are the Support of the earth; You Yourself behold and understand it. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The mind runs off, and it cannot be held back or called home.

Without the color of the One's sweet taste, it has no honor and no standing.

You Yourself are the Listener, and You Yourself keep us safe.

You hold up the earth; You Yourself see it and understand it.

The One is the deep Listener who hears everything and keeps us safe.
The deeper layer

The mind runs off on its own, and the One who holds up the earth is the One who hears it and keeps it safe.

Too aape surtaa aap raakh: You Yourself are the Listener and the Protector. The One who upholds the earth (dhar dhaaran) is the same One who hears and steadies the wandering mind. Deep listening runs both ways.

A Question to Sit With

Who listens to you closely, and what does it feel like to be heard?
