Free of Both Ups and Downs

harakh sog tay raheh niraasaa.
They remain free of any desire for happiness or sorrow;
amrit chaakh har naam nivaasaa.
tasting the Amrit, the Ambrosial Nectar, they abide in the Lord's Name.
aap pachhaan rahai liv laagaa.
They recognize their own selves, and remain lovingly attuned to the Lord.
janam jeet gurmat dukh bhaagaa. ||6||
They are victorious on the battlefield of life, following the Guru's Teachings, and their pains run away. ||6||

In plain words

They stay free of craving happy times or sad times.

Tasting the sweet nectar, they live in the One's Naam.

They know their own selves, and they stay tuned to the One in love, like a string held to its note.

Following the Guru's teaching, they win the battle of life, and their pain runs away.

Tuned to the One, you stop being tossed by every high and low.
The deeper layer

Tasting the Naam frees you from being tossed by every high and low, and your life is won.

Harakh sog te raheh niraasaa: free of being tossed by joy and sorrow. Aap pachhaan rahai liv laagaa: knowing one's own self, one stays lovingly attuned. Janam jeet: the life is won, made to count, and dukh runs off.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you stay steady whether things are going great or going badly?
