Sikhism·Raag Basant·Shabad 68
Verse 4 of 11

All Worth Is in the Name

ਕਿਆ ਹਉ ਆਖਾ ਜਾਂ ਕਛੂ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
ki-aa ha-o aakhaa jaaN kachhoo naahi.
What can I say? I am nothing.
ਜਾਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੩॥
jaat pat sabh tayrai naa-ay. ||3||
All my status and honor are in Your Name. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

What can I say? I am nothing.

All my standing and all my honor are in Your Naam.

Worth comes from the Naam, not from family or rank.
The deeper layer

On your own you have nothing to boast of; all your standing and honor rest in the One's Naam.

Jaat pat sabh terai naae: all caste and honor rest in Your Naam, not in birth or rank. Kiaa hao aakhaa jaan kachhoo naahi: standing empty-handed before the One, boasting is impossible. Worth comes from the Naam, shared equally by all.

A Question to Sit With

If nobody knew your name or where you came from, what would still be true about you?
