Verse 2 of 9

Only the Guru's Way Clears It

ਮਨੁ ਅੰਧੁਲਾ ਅੰਧੁਲੀ ਮਤਿ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
man anDhulaa anDhulee mat laagai.
The blind man follows blind advice.
ਗੁਰ ਕਰਣੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਭਾਗੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur karnee bin bharam na bhaagai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Unless one takes the Guru's Way, his doubt is not dispelled. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A mind that cannot see follows advice that cannot see either.

Without walking the Guru's way, the doubt does not run off.

Confusion cannot cure confusion; the Guru's way clears the fog.
The deeper layer

Confusion cannot clear confusion; walking the Guru's way is what clears the doubt.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Man andhulaa andhulee mat laagai — a mind in the dark follows advice that is also in the dark. Gur karnee bin bharam na bhaagai: only by walking the Guru's way does the doubt run off. Confusion cannot cure confusion.

A Question to Sit With

When you are confused, how do you find advice you can trust?
