Pride That Won't Let Go

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨ ਭਾਈ ॥
manmukh anDhulay gurmat na bhaa-ee.
The manmukh is blind; he does not like the Guru's Teachings.
ਪਸੂ ਭਏ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੨॥
pasoo bha-ay abhimaan na jaa-ee. ||2||
He has become a beast; he cannot get rid of his egotistical pride. ||2||

In plain words

The one turned only toward their own wants cannot see, and does not like the Guru's teaching.

They turn rough as an animal, and their proud it's-all-about-me feeling does not go away.

Pride makes a heart small; something bigger than the self melts it.
The deeper layer

Pride can make a person rough and small, and it does not leave on its own.

Manmukh andhulay gurmat na bhaa-ee — the self-turned heart does not warm to the Guru's teaching. Pasoo bhae abhimaan na jaaee — pride can make a person act small and beastly, and it will not leave on its own. Abhimaan is stubborn self-importance; it takes the touch of something larger than the self to dissolve it.

A Question to Sit With

What helps pride soften in you when it starts to take over?
