Sikhism·Raag Basant·Shabad 7
Verse 4 of 5

Wake Up in Devotion

ਗੁਰੁ ਤੁਠਾ ਬਖਸੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਉ ॥
gur tuthaa bakhsay bhagat bhaa-o.
When the Guru is pleased, He blesses the mortals with loving devotional worship of the Lord.
ਗੁਰਿ ਤੁਠੈ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਮਹਲਿ ਠਾਉ ॥
gur tuthai paa-ee-ai har mahal thaa-o.
When the Guru is pleased, the mortal obtains a place in the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.
ਪਰਹਰਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਜਾਗੁ ॥
parhar nindaa har bhagat jaag.
So renounce slander, and awaken in devotional worship of the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਕਰਮਿ ਭਾਗੁ ॥੩॥
har bhagat suhaavee karam bhaag. ||3||
Devotion to the Lord is wonderful; it comes through good karma and destiny. ||3||

In plain words

When the Guru is pleased, the Guru gives the gift of loving devotion to the One.

When the Guru is pleased, you find a place in the One's own home.

So let go of speaking badly of others, and wake up in devotion to the One.

Devotion to the One is beautiful. It comes through grace and good fortune.

Set gossip down and wake up into love; devotion arrives as a gift.
The deeper layer

Love for the One comes as a gift.

The verse leans on gur tuthaa, "when the Guru is pleased." When the Guru is glad, loving devotion, bhagat, is given. When the Guru is glad, you find a place in har mahal, the One's own home. None of it is earned like points in a game.

There is one thing to do. Parhar nindaa har bhagat jaag — set down gossip, and wake up in devotion. Think of a morning alarm. You cannot enjoy a sunny day while you are still asleep.

The last line says devotion comes through karam bhaag, grace and good fortune. Here that means love waking up, not a reward added up on a scoreboard.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing you could set down to make room for something you love more?
