In plain words

The Guru joins you with the One and gives the gift of the Naam.

The Guru loves the Sikhs, day and night.

They receive the fruit of the Naam when the Guru, pleased, gives it.

Nanak says: those who receive it are very rare.

The Naam is a rare and precious gift, handed over out of pure kindness.
The deeper layer

The Naam is a rare and precious gift, given out of kindness.

Gur mayl milaavai karay daat — the Guru joins us to the One and gives the gift. The Guru loves the Sikhs dinas raat, day and night. The fruit of the Naam comes when gur tus day-ay, when the Guru gives it out of kindness.

The last line says kaho naanak paavahi virlay kay-ay — says Nanak, rare are those who receive it. That line is not meant to discourage anyone. It shows how precious the gift is. Think of a shooting star. It is rare, and that is exactly why everyone stops to look.

A Question to Sit With

What is something rare and precious that you would take special care of?
