When the Humble Meet

ਜਨ ਕਉ ਜਨੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਵੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ॥

The servants of my Lord and Master are loved by the Beloved. They are the slaves of His slaves. ||7||

In plain words

When one humble servant of the One meets another, they find honor. In the One's goodness, their own goodness shines.

The servants of my Master are dear to the Beloved. They are the servants of the One's servants.

Goodness shines brightest when good hearts meet, and the humblest are the most beloved.
The deeper layer

When one good person meets another, the good in both shines brighter.

Jan ka-o jan mil sobhaa paavai — when one jan, one devoted person, meets another, both find honour. Gun meh gun pargaasaa — gun means goodness, a good quality. Goodness lights up inside goodness. Think of two candles held close. Together they make one bigger, brighter flame. Being together multiplies the good.

Mayray thaakur kay jan pareetam pi-aaray — the Master's people are dear to the Beloved. Who are they? Jo hoveh daasan daasaa — the ones who serve the servants. They have no wish to be above anyone.

This is the opposite of ego. Honour comes from bending low to serve, side by side with good people, rather than from climbing over others.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone whose goodness makes you want to be better too?
