Please be merciful, and attach me to the hem of Your robe.

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You are the Creator, and You are the One who does everything.

You are high and lifted up, and You go on without end.

Be kind, and hold me to the hem of Your robe.

Nanak, Your servant, says: I have come into the shelter of the One.

Hold onto the One like a child gripping a parent's hem — and you are home.
The deeper layer

Trust the One completely and hold on, like a child holding a parent's robe.

Too kartaa too karanhaar: You are the Creator and the Doer. Too oochaa too baho apaar: high and endlessly vast. Larh layho laa-ay: attach me to the larh, the hem of Your robe, the way a small child grips a parent's clothes in a crowd. Naanak daas prabh kee sarnaa-ay: Nanak, the servant, has come into the shelter of the One. The wanderer has arrived, holding on.

A Question to Sit With

When have you held onto someone you trusted to feel safe in a crowd or a hard moment?
