Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Where do we come from? Where do we live? Where do we go in the end?
All living beings belong to the Master. Who can say what the One is worth?
Those who speak of the One, remember the One and listen every day — those devotees are made beautiful.
The Great One is beyond reach and beyond knowing; no one else is equal to the One.
Nanak says: the Perfect Guru taught this Truth, and I tell it to the whole world.
We come from the One, belong to the One, and return to the One.
The last pauri of the Vaar opens with the biggest questions a person can ask: kithhu upjai, kah rahai, kah maahi samaavai, where do we come from, where do we stay, where do we go? The answer comes as a "whose": jee-a jant sabh khasam kay, every being belongs to the Master, whose worth no one can price. Those who kahan dhi-aa-in sunan, speak, remember and listen, become suhaavai, beautiful. The One is agam agochar, beyond reach and beyond knowing, with no second beside it. The Perfect Guru taught this sach, this Truth, and Nanak passes it on for all to hear.
Of the three big questions — where you came from, where you are, where you are going — which one do you most wonder about?
