Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

One day a longing rose up in my mind.

I ground fragrant sandalwood and gathered many sweet-smelling oils.

I went to the One's holy place to worship there.

And the One showed me the Guru, right inside my own mind.

You can set out searching far away and discover it was inside you the whole time.
The deeper layer

You can set out to worship far away and find that the One was inside you all along.

Ghas chandan means grinding sandalwood. Raamaanand made sweet-smelling sandalwood paste and gathered fragrant oils. Poojan chaalee barahm thaa-ay means I went off to worship at the One's place.

Then came the surprise. So barahm bataa-i-o gur man hee maahi means the One showed me the Guru, right inside my own mind.

Think of hunting all over the house for your glasses, and then finding them on top of your head. What we search for far away is often closest of all.

A Question to Sit With

Has something you were looking for ever turned out to be closer than you thought?
