I Would Travel There Only If You Weren't Here

ਜਹਾ ਜਾਈਐ ਤਹ ਜਲ ਪਖਾਨ ॥
jahaa jaa-ee-ai tah jal pakhaan.
Wherever I go, I find water and stones.
ਤੂ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਸਮਾਨ ॥
too poor rahi-o hai sabh samaan.
You are totally pervading and permeating in all.
ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਸਭ ਦੇਖੇ ਜੋਇ ॥
bayd puraan sabh daykhay jo-ay.
I have searched through all the Vedas and the Puraanas.
ਊਹਾਂ ਤਉ ਜਾਈਐ ਜਉ ਈਹਾਂ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
oohaaN ta-o jaa-ee-ai ja-o eehaaN na ho-ay. ||2||
I would go there, only if the Lord were not here. ||2||

In plain words

Wherever I go, I find water and stones.

You are filling everything, everywhere, all the same.

I have looked through all the Vedas and the Puranas, the old holy books.

I would go off there only if You were not here.

You would need to travel far only if the One were not already right here — but it is.
The deeper layer

You would travel far to find the One only if the One were not already here.

Jahaa jaa-ee-ai tah jal pakhaan means wherever I go, I find water and stones. The holy places have rivers and stone statues, but too poor rahi-o hai sabh samaan means You fill everything, everywhere, the same.

Raamaanand looked through all the Vedas and Puranas, the old holy books. He found the same answer. He would go far away only if the One were not right here.

Think of calling out "Where are you, Mom?" while she is standing right next to you. No holy place is mocked here. The reminder, for everyone, is that the One is already right here.

A Question to Sit With

If the thing you seek is already everywhere, how might that change how you look around?
