Verse 4 of 5

Lead Me to the One Who Knows the Way

ਹੋਹੁ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਤੂ ਮੋ ਕਉ ॥
hohu da-i-aal satgur mayl too mo ka-o.
Please be merciful, and unite me with the True Guru;
ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੇ ਕੇਸਵਾ ॥੩॥
paar utaaray kaysvaa. ||3||
carry me across, O Lord. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Be kind to me, and bring me together with the True Guru.

Carry me across, O Keshav, my Lord.

A good guide who knows the way can bring you safely across.
The deeper layer

Asking for kindness, you ask to be brought to the Guru, and to be carried across.

Hohu da-i-aal: be kind, be merciful. Satgur mayl: unite me with the satgur, the True Guru. Paar utaaray: carry me over to the far side. Think of a ferry pilot who knows every rock in the river and brings the boat in safely.

A Question to Sit With

Who is a guide in your life who helps you find your way?
