aap marai avraa nah maarai. ||3||
He kills his self-conceit, and does not kill anyone else. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The one who thinks deeply about what is true stays awake and aware.

They bring their own pride to an end, and they harm no one else.

Waking up makes you gentler with others, not harder.
The deeper layer

Being awake means ending your own pride and harming no one else.

So jaagai jo tat beechaarai: awake is the one who reflects on tat, the heart of what is true. Aap marai avraa nah maarai: they let their own self-importance die away, and they hurt no one else. The hard work is done on yourself, never on anyone else.

A Question to Sit With

Can you think of a time being honest with yourself helped you be kinder to someone else?
