The Clear-Seeing Eye

ਕਹਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨੁ ਜਾਗੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
kahat naanak jan jaagai so-ay.
Says Nanak, that humble being remains awake and aware,
ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਨੇਤ੍ਰੀ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥੨॥
gi-aan anjan jaa kee naytree ho-ay. ||6||2||
who applies the ointment of spiritual wisdom to his eyes. ||6||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Nanak says: that humble one stays awake and aware

whose eyes are touched with the soothing ointment of wisdom.

Wisdom is like eye-salve — it clears your sight to see what was always there.
The deeper layer

Wisdom is like a soothing ointment for the eyes; with it, you stay awake and see clearly.

Kahat naanak jan jaagai so-ay: Nanak says, that humble one is awake. Gi-aan anjan jaa kee naytree ho-ay: whose eyes wear the anjan of gi-aan. Anjan is a dark ointment people in India put along the eyes to soothe and protect them; gi-aan is spiritual wisdom. The shabad that began with everyone asleep ends with clear, open eyes, a fitting close for Bhairao, a morning raag.

A Question to Sit With

What's something you couldn't see before that suddenly became clear to you?
