ਨਾਉ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਉ ਮੇਰੇ ਪੂੰਜੀ ॥
naa-o mayray maa-i-aa naa-o mayray poonjee.
The Name is Maya and wealth for me; the Name is my capital.
ਤੁਮਹਿ ਛੋਡਿ ਜਾਨਉ ਨਹੀ ਦੂਜੀ ॥੨॥
tumeh chhod jaan-o nahee doojee. ||2||
I do not forsake You; I do not know any other at all. ||2||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The Naam is my riches, and the Naam is my savings.
I won't let You go; I don't know any other at all.
When your treasure is the One, there is no second thing to hedge your bets on.
When the Naam is your savings, you need no backup plan.
Maa-i-aa usually means the glittering world of money and things that pulls the heart every which way. Here it is turned inside out: the Naam itself becomes his maa-i-aa and his poonjee (capital, the merchant's starting fund). Tumeh chhod jaanau nahee doojee — “letting You go, I know no other.” No backup plan, no divided heart.
A Question to Sit With
Is there something you rely on as a “backup” instead of trusting what matters most?
