This Human Life the Very Gods Long For

ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਮਾਈ ॥
gur sayvaa tay bhagat kamaa-ee.
Serving the Guru, devotional worship is practiced.

tab ih maanas dayhee paa-ee.
Then, this human body is obtained.
ਇਸ ਦੇਹੀ ਕਉ ਸਿਮਰਹਿ ਦੇਵ ॥

Even the gods long for this human body.

so dayhee bhaj har kee sayv. ||1||
So vibrate that human body, and think of serving the Lord. ||1||

In plain words

Through serving the Guru, devotion is practiced, and then this human body is given.

Even the gods long for this human body. So with this body, sing to the One and serve the One.

Your human life is a rare gift — fill it with love and remembering.
The deeper layer

A human life is a gift so precious that even the gods long for it, so fill it with remembering and serving the One.

Gur sayvaa tay bhagat kamaa-ee: through serving the Guru, devotion is practiced. Is dayhee ka-o simrahi dayv: even the gods long for this body. In the old Indian picture the gods live in bright worlds, yet a human life is the rare chance to wake up to the One. So dayhee bhaj har kee sayv: so with this body, sing and serve the One. The feeling is celebration: what a gift this life is.

A Question to Sit With

If this life is a rare and precious gift, what's one thing you'd want to do more of with it?
