The One You Seek Is Already Within

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਦੇਉ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਅੰਧੁ ॥
antar day-o na jaanai anDh.
The Divine Lord is within the self, but the spiritually blind one does not know this.
ਭ੍ਰਮ ਕਾ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਪਾਵੈ ਫੰਧੁ ॥
bharam kaa mohi-aa paavai fanDh.
Deluded by doubt, he is caught in the noose.
ਨ ਪਾਥਰੁ ਬੋਲੈ ਨਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਦੇਇ ॥
na paathar bolai naa kichh day-ay.
The stone does not speak; it does not give anything to anyone.
ਫੋਕਟ ਕਰਮ ਨਿਹਫਲ ਹੈ ਸੇਵ ॥੨॥
fokat karam nihfal hai sayv. ||2||
Such religious rituals are useless; such service is fruitless. ||2||

In plain words

The Divine is inside you, but the one who cannot see does not know it.

Fooled by doubt, that one is caught in a trap.

A stone does not speak, and it gives nothing to anyone.

Such empty rituals are useless, and such service bears no fruit.

What you're seeking is already within you — don't walk past it looking only outside.
The deeper layer

The Divine you are looking for is already inside you.

Antar day-o na jaanai andh: the One is within, but the unseeing one does not know it. Bhram kaa mohi-aa paavai fandh: charmed by doubt, a person steps into a snare. The presence you seek is already inside you, so looking for it only in an outer object misses the mark. Na paathar bolai naa kichh day-ay: the stone neither speaks nor gives. The critique is of hollow, heartless ritual, in any faith; devotion itself the hymn holds high.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever searched everywhere for something that was in your own pocket the whole time?
