No Room for Looking Down

ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਕੋਈ ॥
ustat nindaa karay ki-aa ko-ee.
How can anyone praise or slander anyone else?
ਜਾਂ ਆਪੇ ਵਰਤੈ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ॥੨॥
jaaN aapay vartai ayko so-ee. ||2||
The One Lord Himself is pervading and permeating all. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

How can anyone praise one person and speak badly of another,

when the One alone is living in all?

If the One lives in everyone, there's no room for looking down on anyone.
The deeper layer

Once you see the One in everyone, looking down on anyone stops making sense.

Ustat nindaa karay ki-aa ko-ee asks, "How can anyone praise some people and put others down?" Ustat is praise. Nindaa is slander, talking badly about someone. The answer comes next: jaan aapay vartai ayko so-ee, "when the One alone is living in all."

Imagine the same friend's voice coming through every phone in a class group chat. Mocking any one message would be mocking that same friend. That is the Guru's point. Seeing the One in all turns straight into a way of living: no looking down on anyone.

If someone is being unkind to you or hurting you, that is never something you have to accept. Telling a grown-up you trust is always the right thing to do.

A Question to Sit With

How would knowing the One is in them too change how you treat someone you don't like?
