It's All Grace

ਭਨਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਕੋਇ ॥
bhanat naanak karay ki-aa ko-ay.
Prays Nanak, what can anyone do?
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥੪॥
jis no aap milaavai so-ay. ||4||4||
He alone meets with the Lord, whom the Lord Himself meets. ||4||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Nanak prays: what can anyone do?

Only the one whom the One brings close meets the One.

Meeting the One is grace from start to finish — and grace is always reaching toward you.
The deeper layer

Meeting the One is grace from start to finish.

Bhanat naanak karay ki-aa ko-ay means "Nanak prays: what can anyone do on their own?" Then jis no aap milaavai so-ay: "only the one whom the One brings close gets to meet."

This can sound like the One picks favorites. It does not mean that. Think of the sun. It shines on every window on the street. The windows with open curtains fill with light. Grace is always there, reaching toward us. We receive it when we stop blocking it.

A Question to Sit With

What's something good in your life that came to you more as a gift than a reward?
