In plain words

Please drink this milk, O Gobind, my King.

Drink this milk, and my mind will be at peace.

If You don't, my father will be cross with me.

You can offer your love openly and simply, holding nothing back.
The deeper layer

Love asks simply, with the whole heart: please take what I bring.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Doodh pee-o gobinday raa-ay: please drink this milk, O Gobind, my King. Mayro man patee-aa-ay: then my mind will be at peace. Naahee ta ghar ko baap risaa-ay: if not, my father at home will be cross.

In the old story, Namdev's father had asked him to make the offering that day. The plea comes out the way a boy's would: honest, a little worried, and sure that the One is listening.

A Question to Sit With

When have you hoped someone would accept a gift from you?
