No Need To Argue

ਬਾਦੁ ਬਿਬਾਦੁ ਕਾਹੂ ਸਿਉ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
baad bibaad kaahoo si-o na keejai.
Do not engage in any arguments or debates with anyone.
ਰਸਨਾ ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਨੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੨॥
rasnaa raam rasaa-in peejai. ||2||
With your tongue, savor the Lord's sublime essence. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Don't get into arguments and quarrels with anyone.

With your tongue, drink in the sweet essence of Raam, the One.

You do not have to win every argument to be at peace.
The deeper layer

Let arguments go, and use your tongue to taste the sweetness of the One.

Baad bibaad means arguments and debates. Namdev says kaahoo si-o na keejai: don't argue with anyone.

Instead, rasnaa raam rasaa-in peejai: with your tongue, drink the sweet essence of the One. Rasaa-in is the finest, sweetest part of something.

Think of two friends fighting over who's right about a movie. They could spend that time watching another good movie together.

Namdev would rather use his breath to taste the Naam than to win a fight.

A Question to Sit With

When is it better to let an argument go?
