Full Days And Lean Days

ਕਬਹੂ ਖੀਰਿ ਖਾਡ ਘੀਉ ਨ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
kabhoo kheer khaad ghee-o na bhaavai.
Sometimes, people do not appreciate milk, sugar and ghee.
ਕਬਹੂ ਘਰ ਘਰ ਟੂਕ ਮਗਾਵੈ ॥
kabhoo ghar ghar took magaavai.
Sometimes, they have to beg for bread from door to door.
ਕਬਹੂ ਕੂਰਨੁ ਚਨੇ ਬਿਨਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
kabhoo kooran chanay binaavai. ||1||
Sometimes, they have to pick out the grain from the chaff. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Sometimes there is rice pudding, sugar and ghee, and still people don't enjoy it.

Sometimes they have to ask for bread from door to door.

Sometimes they have to pick through the husks for a few grains.

Good times and lean times both come and go.
The deeper layer

Life keeps turning, from plenty to very little and back again.

Kabhoo kheer khaad ghee-o na bhaavai: sometimes even rice pudding, sugar and ghee do not please. Kabhoo ghar ghar took magaavai: sometimes a person asks for bread at door after door. Kabhoo kooran chanay binaavai: sometimes they pick the grains out of the chaff.

This opens a chain of "sometimes" pictures that runs through the whole shabad. Nobody stays in one place on the wheel.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you have that is easy to take for granted?
