In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

As a hungry person loves food, and a thirsty person can think only of water,

and as a foolish person clings to family and nothing else, so Narayan, the One, is dear to Namdev.

The One can be as dear to you as the things you need most.
The deeper layer

The One can be as dear as food to the hungry and water to the thirsty.

The shabad opens with Ik Onkar, the One Creator of all. Then come three homely pictures of longing. "jaisee bhookhay pareet anaaj" — as the hungry love grain. The thirsty need water. And a foolish person, moorh, clings to family and nothing else. "aisee naamay pareet naraa-in" — just so, Namdev loves the One.

Think of coming home starving to the smell of dinner. You cannot think of anything else. That is how much the One means to Namdev.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you long for that shows what you love?
