Sikhism·Raag Bhairao·Shabad 126
Verse 3 of 5

Swept Up In Love

ਜੈਸੀ ਪਰ ਪੁਰਖਾ ਰਤ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
jaisee par purkhaa rat naaree.
Like the woman who falls in love with another man,
ਲੋਭੀ ਨਰੁ ਧਨ ਕਾ ਹਿਤਕਾਰੀ ॥
lobhee nar Dhan kaa hitkaaree.
and the greedy man who loves only wealth,
ਕਾਮੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਾਮਨੀ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥
kaamee purakh kaamnee pi-aaree.
and the sexually promiscuous man who loves women and sex,
ਐਸੀ ਨਾਮੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
aisee naamay pareet muraaree. ||2||
just so, Naam Dayv is in love with the Lord. ||2||

In plain words

As someone can lose their heart to a person who is not their partner,

as a greedy person loves only money,

and as someone full of wanting can think only of the one they desire,

so Namdev loves Muraaree, the One.

The heart can be swept up in the One as fully as in anything.
The deeper layer

A heart can be swept up in the One as completely as people get swept up in strong wants.

The verse gives three pictures of strong grown-up longings. Someone is drawn to a person who is not their partner. A greedy person thinks only of money. Another is ruled by desire. Each is so swept up that nothing else gets their attention.

"aisee naamay pareet muraaree" — just so is Namdev's love for Muraaree, a name for the One. The verse does not praise those longings. It borrows only their strength. Think of someone so lost in a video game that dinner goes cold. Namdev turns that same full focus toward the One.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that fills your mind so completely you forget the time?
