When Grace and Effort Meet

ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੈ ॥
karam hovai gur kirpaa karai.
When the mortal has good karma, the Guru grants His Grace.
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਜਾਗੈ ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਮਰੈ ॥੪॥
ih man jaagai is man kee dubiDhaa marai. ||4||
Then this mind is awakened, and the duality of this mind is subdued. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When there is good karma, the Guru gives grace.

Then this mind wakes up, and the two-way pull in this mind dies away.

When your effort and grace meet, the mind wakes and the inner tug-of-war quiets.
The deeper layer

When grace comes through the Guru, the mind wakes up and its two-way pull dies away.

Karam hovai gur kirpaa karai: when there is karam — good karma, and also the One's kindness — the Guru gives grace. Ih man jaagai is man kee dubidhaa marai: this mind wakes, and its tug-of-war ends. Effort and grace work together: grace is always there, and your effort opens the door to it.

A Question to Sit With

When has your own effort and a bit of good luck or help come together just right?
