Verse 6 of 7

The Mind's Deep-Down Nature

ਮਨ ਕਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਸਦਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥
man kaa subhaa-o sadaa bairaagee.
It is the innate nature of the mind to remain forever detached.
ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਵਸੈ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਅਨਰਾਗੀ ॥੫॥
sabh meh vasai ateet anraagee. ||5||
The Detached, Dispassionate Lord dwells within all. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The mind's own nature is always to stay free, holding on to nothing.

The Free One, who clings to nothing, lives within all.

Underneath all its worry, your mind's truest nature is free and light.
The deeper layer

Deep down, your mind is free and unclinging, and the One who clings to nothing lives in everyone.

Man kaa subhaa-o sadaa bairaagee: the mind's nature is always bairaagee, free of clinging. Sabh meh vasai ateet anraagee: the One who is beyond everything and wants nothing lives in all. This freedom is remembered more than won; it was always the deeper nature.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to rest in the calm that's underneath your busy thoughts?
