Sikhism·Raag Bhairao·Shabad 130
Verse 6 of 10

Nothing to Prove

ਜਉ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਸਦਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥
ja-o gurday-o sadaa bairaagee.
When the Divine Guru grants His Grace, one remains detached forever.
ਜਉ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਤਿਆਗੀ ॥
ja-o gurday-o par nindaa ti-aagee.
When the Divine Guru grants His Grace, one forsakes the slander of others.
ਜਉ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਏਕ ॥
ja-o gurday-o buraa bhalaa ayk.
When the Divine Guru grants His Grace, one looks upon good and bad as the same.
ਜਉ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਲਿਲਾਟਹਿ ਲੇਖ ॥੫॥
ja-o gurday-o lilaateh laykh. ||5||
When the Divine Guru grants His Grace, one has good destiny written on his forehead. ||5||

In plain words

By the Divine Guru's grace, you stay free of clinging, always. By the Divine Guru's grace, you give up speaking badly of others.

By the Divine Guru's grace, good and bad look the same to you. By the Divine Guru's grace, a good destiny is written on your forehead.

A settled heart has nothing to prove and no need to put anyone down.
The deeper layer

The Guru's light makes you calm, steady, and kind in how you speak of others.

Ja-o gurday-o sadaa bairaagee — when the Divine Guru comes, you become bairaagee, at ease and not clinging to things. Par nindaa ti-aagee — you give up par nindaa, talking badly about others behind their backs.

Buraa bhalaa ayk — good times and hard times are met with the same steady heart. This is sahaj, the easy calm that doesn't need to be forced. Lilaateh laykh — a bright destiny is written on your forehead.

One of the clearest signs of grace inside is that you stop putting other people down. Think of a friend who never gossips. Everyone feels safe around them.

A Question to Sit With

Why do you think people put others down — and what would it take to stop?
