ਜਉ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਕੰਧੁ ਨਹੀ ਹਿਰੈ ॥
ja-o gurday-o kanDh nahee hirai.
When the Divine Guru grants His Grace, the wall of the body is not eroded.
ਜਉ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਦੇਹੁਰਾ ਫਿਰੈ ॥
ja-o gurday-o dayhuraa firai.
When the Divine Guru grants His Grace, the temple turns itself towards the mortal.
ਜਉ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਤ ਛਾਪਰਿ ਛਾਈ ॥
ja-o gurday-o ta chhaapar chhaa-ee.
When the Divine Guru grants His Grace, one's home is constructed.
ਜਉ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਸਿਹਜ ਨਿਕਸਾਈ ॥੬॥
ja-o gurday-o sihaj niksaa-ee. ||6||
When the Divine Guru grants His Grace, one's bed is lifted up out of the water. ||6||

In plain words

By the Divine Guru's grace, the wall of your body does not crumble away. By the Divine Guru's grace, the temple turns around to face you.

By the Divine Guru's grace, your house is built and roofed over. By the Divine Guru's grace, your bed is lifted up out of the water.

What you travel far to find is often waiting to come toward you at home.
The deeper layer

The Guru's light builds you a safe home inside.

Ja-o gurday-o kandh nahee hirai — when the Divine Guru comes, the kandh, the wall of your being, does not crumble. Dayhuraa firai — the dayhuraa, the temple, turns toward you. Chhaapar chhaa-ee — a roof and shelter are built. Sihaj niksaa-ee — your bed is lifted up out of the flood.

An old story about Namdev tells that he was once turned away from a temple door and sat singing behind it, and the temple turned around to face him. These are pictures of safety and coming home. The holy is found inside, not only at a faraway shrine. You don't have to travel to reach it. It turns and comes to you. Think of a warm light already on in your window when you get home. The sacred lives close, in the human heart.

A Question to Sit With

What makes a place — or a person — feel like home to you?
