ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਅਪਣੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
har jee-o apnee kirpaa karay-i.
When the Dear Lord showers His Mercy,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmukh naam vadi-aa-ee day-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He blesses the Gurmukh with the glorious greatness of the Naam. ||1||Pause||

When the Dear One pours out mercy,
the One blesses those who turn toward the Guru with the greatness of the Naam.
Mercy is always pouring; an open heart lets the Naam grow.
The greatness of the Naam comes as a gift of the One's mercy.
This is the rahao, the pause line, the centre of the shabad. Har jee-o apnee kirpaa karay-i: the Dear One shows kirpaa, mercy. Then the gurmukh is given the vadi-aa-ee, the glory, of the Naam. Grace comes first; the human part is to stay open to it.
