Even Now, Keep the Name in Your Heart

ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
bhairo mehlaa 3.
Bhairao, Third Mehl:
ਕਲਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੁ ॥
kaljug meh raam naam ur Dhaar.
In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, enshrine the Lord's Name within your heart.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮਾਥੈ ਪਾਵੈ ਛਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
bin naavai maathai paavai chhaar. ||1||
Without the Name, ashes will be blown in your face. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In this dark and difficult age, keep the Naam of the One held close in your heart.

Without the Naam, you end up with ashes on your forehead, like dust blown in your face.

In any age, the Naam kept close is what holds when everything else scatters.
The deeper layer

Even in a hard age, the Naam held in the heart is what keeps you from coming away empty.

Kaljug meh raam naam ur dhaar: in Kaljug, the dark age, keep the Naam in your ur, your heart. Bin naavai maathai paavai chhaar: without the Naam, ashes fall on your forehead. Ash is what is left when everything has burned away; without the Naam, nothing holds.

A Question to Sit With

When things feel chaotic, what is one thing you can hold steady?
