The Rare Treasure That Comes by Grace

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੁਲਭੁ ਹੈ ਭਾਈ ॥
raam naam dulabh hai bhaa-ee.
The Lord's Name is so difficult to obtain, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur parsaad vasai man aa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
By Guru's Grace, it comes to dwell in the mind. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Naam of the One is so hard to find, O brothers and sisters.

By the Guru's grace, it comes and lives in the mind.

The rarest treasure arrives by grace, not by grabbing.
The deeper layer

The Naam is rare, and it comes to live in your mind as the Guru's gift.

This is the rahao, the pause line, the centre of the shabad. Raam naam dulabh hai bhaa-ee: the Naam is dulabh, hard to obtain, O siblings. Gur parsaad vasai man aa-ee: by gur parsaad, the Guru's grace, it settles in the mind. The rarest thing arrives as a gift.

A Question to Sit With

What is something valuable you received as a gift rather than earned?
