In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

Those who follow only their own minds are sick with a split, two-sided heart, and they burn in the hot fire of wanting more and more.

They die and are born, again and again, and find no place to rest. Their life slips away for nothing.

Feeling separate is a sickness of the heart, and it can be healed.
The deeper layer

A divided heart full of craving is like a sickness: it burns, and it never finds rest.

These lines open the second house (ghar 2) of Guru Amar Das in this raag. The manmukh, the one who follows only their own mind, is sick with dubidhaa, the sense of being split in two, and burns in trisnaa, craving. Mar mar jameh thaur na paaveh: dying and being born again and again, with no place of rest, a life spent for nothing.

A Question to Sit With

When do you feel most cut off, and what helps you feel connected again?
