The world was made with the sickness of ego (haumai — the feeling of being a separate self). Without the Guru's Word, the sickness does not go away.
Ego is a sickness, and the Guru's Word is the medicine that heals it.
This is the rahao, the pause line, the centre of the shabad. Mayray preetam kar kirpaa dayhu bujhaa-ee: O my Beloved, in Your mercy give me bujhaa-ee, understanding. Ha-umai rogee jagat upaa-i-aa: the world was made sick with haumai, ego. Bin sabdai rog na jaa-ee: without the Word, the sickness stays. Ego is an illness to heal, and understanding is its cure.
