Reading Is Not Yet Knowing

There are so many silent sages, who read the Simritees and the Shaastras; without the Shabad, they have no clear awareness.

All those under the influence of the three qualities are afflicted with the disease; through possessiveness, they lose their awareness. ||2||

In plain words

So many silent sages read the Simritees and the Shaastras, the old holy books, yet without the Word they do not find clear awareness.

All who are caught up in the three moods of the mind are sick, and by clinging to "mine, mine," they lose their awareness.

Reading about truth is a beginning; knowing it lives inside.
The deeper layer

Clear awareness comes through the Word, and clinging to "mine" clouds it.

Simrit saastar parheh mun kaytay: many mun, silent sages, read the Simritees and Shaastras, honored scriptures of the Hindu tradition. Bin sabdai surat na paa-ee: without the Word, surat, clear awareness, does not come. The trai gun, the three qualities that move every mind, and mamtaa, possessiveness, cloud it. The books are honored; reading becomes knowing through the Word.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you understood only after living it, not just reading it?
