Bhairao, Third Mehl:
dukh vich jammai dukh marai dukh vich kaar kamaa-ay.
In pain he is born, in pain he dies, and in pain he does his deeds.
He is never released from the womb of reincarnation; he rots away in manure. ||1||

In plain words

In pain they are born, in pain they die, and in pain they do all their work.

They never get free from the round of being born again and again, and they sink down into the muck.

Pain can feel endless, but a gentler path is always opening.
The deeper layer

A life lived away from the One is pain from start to finish, going round and round.

Dukh vich jammai dukh marai: born in pain, dying in pain, working in pain. Garabh jonee vich kaday na niklai: never coming out of the round of births. Bistaa maahi samaa-ay: sinking into filth. The picture is stark, and the pause line that follows names whose life this is: the one who wastes it away from the Guru and the Naam.

A Question to Sit With

When something hurt for a long time, what finally helped it ease?
