The Kindness of Turning Back

ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥

Cursed, cursed is the self-willed manmukh, who wastes his life away.

pooray gur kee sayv na keenee har kaa naam na bhaa-i-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He does not serve the Perfect Guru; he does not love the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Shame, shame on the life of the one who follows only their own mind and wastes it away.

They do not serve the Perfect Guru, and the Naam of the One does not feel sweet to them.

However far a heart drifts, turning back toward the Name is always open and kind.
The deeper layer

A life spent away from the Guru and the Naam is a life wasted.

This is the rahao, the pause line, the centre of the shabad. Dhrig dhrig manmukh janam gavaa-i-aa: dhrig, shame, twice over, on the manmukh, the one who follows only their own mind and wastes a life. Pooray gur kee sayv na keenee: they did not serve the Perfect Guru. Har kaa naam na bhaa-i-aa: the Naam did not please them. It is the strongest word of warning, said so a heart can wake up.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you turn back when you have drifted from something good?
