The Hunger That Nothing Fills

ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
bhairo mehlaa 3.
Bhairao, Third Mehl:
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਆਸਾ ਨਹੀ ਉਤਰੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਖੁਆਏ ॥
manmukh aasaa nahee utrai doojai bhaa-ay khu-aa-ay.
The self-willed manmukh cannot escape false hope. In the love of duality, he is ruined.
His belly is like a river - it is never filled up. He is consumed by the fire of desire. ||1||

In plain words

The one who follows only their own mind cannot get free of false hopes. Loving something other than the One, they come to ruin.

Their belly is like a river that is never full. The fire of wanting burns them up.

Endless wanting is a thirst nothing outside can fill.
The deeper layer

Wanting that never stops is a fire, and no amount of more can fill it.

Manmukh aasaa nahee utrai: the one turned toward their own mind cannot set hope down; it keeps reaching. Doojai bhaa-ay khu-aa-ay: in love of something other than the One, they lose their way. Udar nai saan: the belly is like a river. A river keeps taking in water and never says "enough." Trisnaa agan pachaa-ay: the fire of craving, trisnaa, burns on.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you wanted badly that did not satisfy you once you had it?
