Sikhism·Raag Bhairao·Shabad 27
Verse 3 of 5

When the True Guru Turns Your Seeing

ਪਸੂਆ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਕੂੜੋ ਹੋਇ ॥
pasoo-aa karam karai nahee boojhai koorh kamaavai koorho ho-ay.
He acts like a beast, and does not understand anything. Practicing falsehood, he becomes false.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਉਲਟੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥
satgur milai ta ultee hovai khoj lahai jan ko-ay. ||2||
But when the mortal meets the True Guru, his way of looking at the world changes. How rare are those humble beings who seek and find the Lord. ||2||

In plain words

Acting like an animal, a person understands nothing. Living by what is false, they become false.

But meet the True Guru, and the way they see the world turns right over. How rare are those who search and find the One.

Meeting the True Guru can flip your whole way of seeing right-side up.
The deeper layer

Meet the True Guru, and your whole way of seeing turns right-side up.

The verse starts with a hard picture. Pasoo-aa karam means acting like an animal, just following whatever pulls you. Koorh kamaavai koorho ho-ay — whoever practices falsehood becomes false. Koorh means what is not true. If you keep chasing what isn't real, you start to feel a little unreal yourself.

Then comes the turn. Satgur milai ta ultee hovai — meet the True Guru, and everything turns over. Think of a picture hung upside down. It looks strange and confusing. Then someone flips it, and suddenly it makes sense.

Khoj lahai jan ko-ay — rare is the one who searches and finds. The verse honors those who search.

A Question to Sit With

Has someone ever helped you see a situation in a completely new way?
