The One Who Sets Us on the Path

ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
aapay kartaa karay karaa-ay aapay maarag paa-ay.
The Creator Himself acts, and causes all to act. He Himself places us on the path.

aapay gurmukh day vadi-aa-ee naanak naam samaa-ay. ||4||9||19||
He Himself blesses the Gurmukh with glorious greatness; O Nanak, he merges in the Naam. ||4||9||19||

In plain words

The Creator acts, and makes everything act. The Creator places us on the path.

The Creator gives greatness to the one who faces the Guru. Nanak says: that person merges into the Naam.

You don't have to force your way alone — the One sets you gently on the path.
The deeper layer

The Creator does everything and sets each of us on the path, and the one who faces the Guru merges into the Naam.

Aapay kartaa karay karaa-ay — the Creator acts and makes everything act. Aapay maarag paa-ay — the Creator places us on the path. Maarag means path.

So our effort matters, but we are never trying all alone. Think of learning to ride a bike. You pedal hard, but a parent's hand steadies the seat behind you.

Aapay gurmukh day vadi-aa-ee — the Creator gives honor to the gurmukh, the one who faces the Guru. And the shabad ends softly. Naanak naam samaa-ay — they merge into the Name, like a drop of water returning to the ocean.
