I Write Your Name on My Tablet

ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Bhairao, Third Mehl:
ਮੇਰੀ ਪਟੀਆ ਲਿਖਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥
mayree patee-aa likhahu har govind gopaalaa.
Upon my writing tablet, I write the Name of the Lord, the Lord of the Universe, the Lord of the World.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਫਾਥੇ ਜਮ ਜਾਲਾ ॥
doojai bhaa-ay faathay jam jaalaa.
In the love of duality, the mortals are caught in the noose of the Messenger of Death.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਕਰੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਾ ॥
satgur karay mayree partipaalaa.
The True Guru nurtures and sustains me.
ਹਰਿ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਮੇਰੈ ਨਾਲਾ ॥੧॥
har sukh-daata mayrai naalaa. ||1||
The Lord, the Giver of peace, is always with me. ||1||

In plain words

On my writing tablet, I write the Naam of the One, the Lord of the Universe, the Lord of the World.

Those caught up in loving something other than the One are trapped in death's net.

The True Guru looks after me and keeps me going. The One, the Giver of peace, is always with me.

Even when people feel lost and afraid, the One who gives peace stays right beside you.
The deeper layer

With the Naam on your slate and the True Guru looking after you, the Giver of peace is always with you.

This is the old story of Prahlaad, a boy devoted to the One, whose father, the king Harnaakhash, demanded that everyone worship him instead. Mayree patee-aa likhahu: on the wooden slate where a child practices letters, Prahlaad writes the Naam. Doojai bhaa-ay faathay jam jaalaa: those caught in love of something other than the One are trapped in jam jaal, death's net. Satgur karay mayree partipaalaa: the True Guru looks after me. Har sukh-daataa mayrai naalaa: the Giver of peace is with me.
