The Lord Himself makes demons pursue the Saints, and He Himself saves them.

Those who remain forever in Your Sanctuary, O Lord - their minds are never touched by sorrow. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One even sends cruel people, fierce as demons, after the holy ones, and the very same One keeps them safe.

Those who stay in Your shelter forever, O One, are never touched by sorrow in their hearts.

Stay in the One's shelter, and sorrow cannot touch your heart.
The deeper layer

The same One who lets trouble come near good people keeps them safe, and sorrow cannot touch those who stay in the One's shelter.

Guru Amar Das, the third Guru, tells the story of Prahlaad. Prahlaad was a boy who loved the One. His father, a proud king, and the king's helpers, called dait or demons, tried to hurt him. The verse says the One let trouble come near the good-hearted, and the same One kept them safe.

The key word is sarnaa-ee, shelter. Think of being inside a warm house during a hailstorm. The hail still bangs on the roof, but you are safe inside. Those who stay in the One's shelter find sorrow cannot get into their hearts.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you go, inside or out, when you need to feel sheltered?
