O Lord, be merciful, and unite me with the Perfect Guru. Joining with the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, I shall cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, sing and remember the Naam of the One.

Be kind, O One, and bring me to the Perfect Guru. Joining the Sangat, the true gathering, I will cross the frightening ocean of the world.

Together with the Sangat, the fear of the wide ocean thins away.
The deeper layer

Ask to be brought to the Guru and the Sangat, and you cross the frightening ocean of the world together.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Guru Ram Das talks to his own mind: sing the Naam of narharee, a name for the One. Then he asks the One to bring him to the Perfect Guru, and to the satsangat, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One.

The world can feel like a wide, scary ocean. Crossing it alone is frightening. Crossing with the Sangat is like being on a boat with your whole team. Together you get across, and the fear thins away.

A Question to Sit With

Who helps a scary thing feel smaller when you face it together?
