Mercy on the One Who Feels Foolish

ਹਮ ਮੂਰਖ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੀ ॥

I am a fool; the Lord has shown mercy to me.
ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਾਰਿਓ ਤਾਰਣ ਹਰੀ ॥੪॥੨॥
jan naanak taari-o taaran haree. ||4||2||
The Savior Lord has saved servant Nanak. ||4||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I am foolish, and still the One has been kind to me.

Nanak, the servant, says: the One who carries people across has carried me across.

Even feeling foolish and small, you're carried across — empty-handed and still carried.
The deeper layer

Even when you feel foolish, the One is kind to you and carries you across.

Guru Ram Das, writing as Nanak, calls himself moorakh, someone who does not know much. Yet the One showed mercy anyway. The One is taaran haree, the One who carries people across.

Think of a friend who helps with your homework even when you feel lost. You showed up empty-handed, and you were still carried across. That is how the One's kindness works.

A Question to Sit With

When were you helped even though you couldn't repay it?
