In plain words

Doing good deeds is the finest string of prayer beads.

Turn those beads in your heart, and they will go along with you.

A life of kind actions is the finest set of prayer-beads, and it goes with you everywhere.
The deeper layer

The finest string of prayer beads is a life of good deeds.

Many people pray with a japmaalee, a string of beads. You move one bead at a time as you repeat a prayer. Guru Ram Das gives the beads a new meaning. Sukirat karnee saar japmaalee — doing good is the best rosary. Sukirat means good, kind actions.

Then he says where to turn the beads: hirdai, in the heart. Each kind thing you do is one bead. Sharing your snack is a bead. Helping a friend up is another.

And that string goes wherever you go. Chalai tudh naalee — it goes along with you. You can't leave it at home, and no one can take it.

A Question to Sit With

What kind action could you turn into a daily habit?
