The five plundering thieves are in the body-village; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Lord has beaten them and driven them out. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Keep the One in your heart, and remember the One.

Five thieves live in the village of the body. Through the Guru's Word, the One has fought them off and driven them out.

Keep the One in your heart, and the Guru's Word drives out the five thieves inside you.
The deeper layer

Keep the One in your heart, and the Guru's Word drives the five thieves out of the body-village.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Madhusoodan japee-ai ur dhaar: keep the One in your heart and remember. Madhusoodan is an old name for the One.

Then comes a picture. Dayhee nagar means the body as a village. Inside it live taskar panch, five thieves. They are strong desire, anger, greed, clinging and pride. They sneak around and steal our peace.

Think of a house where pests have got in. Through the Guru's Word, the One clears them out and sends them on their way. The verse says the One beats them and drives them off. Then the house is peaceful again.

A Question to Sit With

Which thief — anger, greed, envy — do you most want to send off?
