I shot five of the desires with the Word of the Lord's Bani. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

With ease, I tied up the ten deer — the ten senses that run every which way — and brought them in.

The five deer of desire I caught with arrows of the Lord's Word.

Restlessness is tamed by ease, not by force.
The deeper layer

The senses and desires can be gathered in with ease, through the Word.

The pauri turns a hunt inside out. Das mirgee (ten deer) are the ten sense organs; paanch mirag (five deer) are the five restless drives often named lust, anger, greed, attachment, and pride. Sehjay (with natural ease, sahaj) is the key word: the ten are tied up without strain. The five are bedhay, pierced, the way an arrow finds its mark, and the arrow is siv kee baanee, the sacred Word held within.

A Question to Sit With

What is one restless part of you that calms down when you stop fighting it?
