Here and hereafter, He always provides shade. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Guru, the Lord of the Universe, is the helper of the soul.

Here and in the world beyond, the Guru always gives shade, like a big tree on a hot day.

There is a shelter over you that never moves.
The deeper layer

The Guru, the Lord of the Universe, helps your soul and gives shade, here and beyond.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Gur gobind means the Guru, the Lord of the world. The Guru is jee-a kai kaam, the one who helps the soul.

Then comes the picture. The Guru gives chhaam, shade. And that shade is there halat palat, in this life and the next. Think of a hot summer day at a playground with no trees. Then you find one big tree. You sit in its cool shade and you can breathe again. That shade is there for you now, and it will still be there later.

A Question to Sit With

What is a place or person that feels like shade on a hard day?
