Sikhism·Raag Bhairao·Shabad 43
Verse 4 of 5

The Music That Was Always Playing

ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਦੂਖ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥
janam janam kay dookh nivaaray.
The pains of countless lifetimes have been erased.
ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦ ਵਜੇ ਦਰਬਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
anhad sabad vajay darbaaray. ||3||
The Unstruck Sound-current of the Shabad, the Word of God, vibrates in the Court of the Lord. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The pains of life after life have been taken away.

The music of the Word, a music no one plays, rings out in the court of the One.

Under all the noise, a music is always quietly playing.
The deeper layer

Old pains lift away, and a music no one plays rings out in the One's court.

Janam janam kay dookh: the pains of many lifetimes, taken away. Anhad sabad, the unstruck sound, vibrates in the darbaar, the court. It is the music no instrument makes: always present, heard when the mind grows still.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever heard something only because you finally got quiet?
