Two Different Loves

ਦਾਸ ਰਾਮ ਜੀਉ ਲਾਗੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥
daas raam jee-o laagee pareet.
The Lord's slave is in love with the Dear Lord.
ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕੀ ਹੋਈ ਬਿਪਰੀਤਿ ॥੨॥
nindak kee ho-ee bipreet. ||2||
The slanderer loves something else. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One's servant is in love with the dear Lord, Raam.

The one who speaks badly of others loves something else, turned the other way.

Where you aim your love shapes your whole life.
The deeper layer

Where you point your love shapes who you become.

Daas raam jee-o laagee pareet: the servant is in love with the dear One. The one who tears others down has fallen for bipreet: something turned the wrong way, and empty.

The contrast is about the direction of love. Think of a compass needle. Point it north, and it guides you home. Point it the wrong way, and every step takes you further off.

A Question to Sit With

What do the people you admire most seem to love?
